GAY-CLUB SATIRE BITES A BIG ISSUE
(excerpt)
February 17, 1997, Nancy Melich, The Salt Lake Tribune
Plan-B Theatre Company is at it again, cleverly satirizing political affairs. One might call this premiere work an anniversary gift to the Salt Lake School Board. After all, it was February 20, 1996, when members voted to ban student clubs, thereby prohibiting high school gay and lesbian clubs to exist.
The exuberant cast of nine in white face is all over the political map, portraying an aging congressmen in the halls of Washington, D.C., the protesting teens on Utah streets and the ACLU staff members trying to fly out of Los Angeles International.
[Alienation Effekt] is an in-your-face affair.
Tunes from Stephen Foster—"Camptown Races," "Swanee River"—lead the band of protesters up and down theater aisles and into the conscience of today's audience. The performances are lively, the subject matter hot and the intent admirable. The production should tour area high schools, allowing students to invite their parents into yet another controversy.
